In the early 1800s, "theorems" peaked in popularity, temporarily replacing embroidery as the primary artistic diversion for women. Still-life paintings such as this were created using stencils carefully arranged on velvet or linen while watercolors or oils were applied by brush. The original antique resides in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum collection at Colonial Williamsburg.
