Description

This piece is based on needlepoint upholstery removed from a chair in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. The original upholstery on linen needlepoint canvas was made in England between 1760 and 1765. Alternating patterns of lozenges and stars were rendered in shades of blue, red, green, yellow, and brown wool crewel yarns and ivory silks. The resulting "Irish" stitch is often called Florentine or flame stitch today.
