This striking magnolia is taken from a watercolor and pencil painting, circa 1737. Georg Dionysius Ehret, the most distinguished botanical artist of the 18th century, recorded that he traveled three miles daily to sketch this magnolia in all stages, from bud to full bloom. His intention "to publish a perfect botanical study" of the magnolia is certainly fulfilled in this exquisite masterpiece.
