James Guy Evans (1809-59) created the original oil painting of the Brig Georgiana in 1846. Born in New York City, Evans worked as a shoemaker before enlisting in the Marine Corps. Records reveal he worked as a commercial painter in New Orleans until his death, painting houses, ships and signs in addition to his historical, marine and ornamental paintings.
